While some executives fret about the difficulty of developing new stars and driving music discovery — especially in a world where anyone can record a song and upload it to streaming services — Stringer is sanguine about this new landscape.
“Our profit margins are higher than ever, our market share is positive, and we’re having more hits,” he said during a presentation to investors in May. And during a year of unease about the potential for AI technology to replace human artistry, he asserted that AI will eventually “become an extremely positive tool in the artist development process.”
On a corporate level, he told investors that new technology “heralds greater levels of insight through machine learning, as well as potential new licensing channels and avenues for commercial exploitation,” adding, “I believe that our company will find a way of dealing with any threats.”
- Sony Music’s market share continues to climb under Stringer’s leadership, rising to 27.1% overall from 27.0% in 2022 — an increase boosted by Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers,” SZA’s “Kill Bill” and Luke Combs’ “Fast Car.”
- And at a time when demand for Latin and country music is surging, Sony Nashville’s current market share rose from 1.9% in 2022 to 2.3% and Sony Latin’s from 1.2% to 2%.
- Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti and Travis Scott’s Utopia also cracked the top 10 on the year-end Billboard 200 Albums chart, while breakout R&B singer Victoria Monét garnered six Grammy Award nominations.

In response to industry discussions on streaming economics and artist compensation, Spotify announced three operational changes in November: a royalty-qualifying stream threshold, fraud activity penalties, and a minimum track length for revenue from non-music noise uploads.
These changes aim to generate an extra $1 billion in revenue for emerging and professional artists over five years. CEO Ek stressed the importance of efficiency and resourcefulness in a challenging economic climate.
- In 2023, monthly active users grew by 26% year-over-year to 574 million, and subscribers increased by 16% to 226 million, as per the third-quarter earnings report.
- The company has more than 381 million users, 172 million of whom are paying subscribers.
- Under his leadership, the company has reached significant milestones and forged strategic partnerships with the music industry.
‟ There are half a billion people that listen to music online and the vast majority are doing so illegally. But if we bring those people over to the legal side and Spotify, what is going to happen is we are going to double the music industry and that will lead to more artists creating great new music.”
